About Hippo FC We are Hippo FC, a female football club from Margibi County, Liberia.
About Hippo FC: We are Hippo FC, a football club from Margibi County, Liberia. We play to win matches and we play to save forests. Our name comes from the pygmy hippopotamus. It is one of the world’s most endangered animals and it lives here in Liberia. Fewer than 2,500 remain in the wild. We put the pygmy hippo on our crest because if young people are proud of it, they will protect it. Football with Purpose Hippo FC competes in the LFA system. We train boys and girls who love the game. But our pitch is bigger than 90 minutes. From 2026 to 2028, every goal we score plants 100 trees through our Four Birth Trees program. Every assist starts a conversation about the forest. Conservation in Action Our players are not just athletes. Since 2016 they have run Hippo Watch in 6 villages across Margibi and Sinoe Counties. They teach communities how forests protect water, crops, and wildlife. In 2024 our team reported 3 cases of illegal logging to the Forestry Development Authority. In 2025 we planted 400 trees with local schools. Our target is 10,000 by 2028. Built by the Community Hippo FC runs on volunteer power. We have no outside sponsors and no gate fees. AchievementsImpact On and Off the PitchHippo FC started at Harbel College, Margibi County. Founder and first president Dr. Syrulwa Somah built the club as an academy with a dual mission: bring young women into STEM education and raise awareness for the pygmy hippopotamus, climate change, and conservation.County-wide Climate Movement A Hippo FC radio broadcast at Harbel College called on 100 students and listeners to plant four trees each as their birth trees. That call grew into a movement across Margibi County.Scholars and Leaders Our players excel in school. Ben Fayiah graduated as dux of her class at Margibi University, formerly Harbel College. Edith Kominene graduated from Baptist University. Dozens more are now in high schools and universities across Liberia.Firsts in Liberian Sports Organized the first intercollegiate female football tournament in Liberia with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and took the gold. Advocated for the first female team participation in the National County Meet. Helped Grand Bassa and Nimba Counties join the Women Upper League.Champions Won three Executive Referee Cups of Margibi County. Crowned 2025 Margibi County Women Lower League Champions. Hippo FC fought to establish this league to create more paths to professional football for women.National Talent Home to players like Leda Johnson, Lucy Kekeh, Mavis Cole, Gabrielle Lines, and national team goalkeepers Komassa Sumo and Anitha Davis.International Recognition Cited by the Swedish Women Play Organization as a reference point for pioneering women football development in Liberia.This is football for Liberia. She scored 4 hat tricks and added 2 assists during the season.As Captain, she led Hippo FC to 8 wins, 1 draw, and 0 defeats in 9 games with 28 goals scored and only 2 conceded.Jennebah also represents Liberia as a U-15 player for the Lonestar National Team.Every goal she scores supports our Four Birth Trees program.
